Thirty Day Challenge Day 3

On Day 3, we talked about analyzing potential competitors if we use the keyword that we researched on Day 2…

Competition Analysis

Day 03 - Today’s lesson is all about competition. How to measure it, how to analyse it, how to assess it. GuruBob takes us through competition analysis using the Market Samurai software. This is a must see lesson and is crucial in your ability to move forward with the right keywords.

Ed shows us how to use the Firefox/Flock addon called SEO For Firefox to perform your competition research if you’re not using Market Samurai.

The Market Samurai has a SEO Competition functionality that allows real time competition analysis of a keyword. It checks for websites that use a broad for that keyword and has the following output:
Off page optimization-related metrics
Domain Age - because Google prefers older domains
Page Rank - Google’s estimate of the site’s authority given that keyword
Alexa Ranking - Indicator of how much traffic a website is getting. A lower number means bigger amount of traffic. They might be removing this one later.
Domain and Page Back links
.GOV or .EDU Back links - because Google thinks the site has more authority if a .GOV or .EDU site links to it.
Yahoo directory - means that the site owner invests $300/year to be listed in a Yahoo directory

On page optimization-related metrics
- Basically tells you if the title, URL, description or header (h1, h2, etc tags) have that keyword.
- Google Cache Age (CA) - difference of date today and the last time Google cached the site

In Guru Bob’s example, a blank blog that had the keyword in the blog’s URL, title and header was ranked higher than the other sites that had content. Does that mean on page optimization is more important? Hmmm….
